Restylane
What is Restylane?
Restylane is a line of dermal fillers that is approved by the FDA for the treatment of nasolabial folds (the lines that connect the nose to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (depressions next to chin), lip enhancement, cheek augmentation and hand enhancement.
The Restylane family of products includes:
- Restylane Lyft: provides a lift to the cheeks by adding volume, which can correct and smooth smile lines (nasolabial folds)
- Restylane Silk: specifically designed for lip augmentation and the smoothing of wrinkles around the mouth.
- Restylane Refyne: helps soften laugh lines (nasolabial folds and marionette lines)
- Restylane Defyne: smooths out deeper laugh lines
Restylane is also commonly used off-label to improve the depressions under the eyes, or the tear troughs, or fixed wrinkles on the face. Restylane can also be used for lip augmentation for fuller, softer-looking lips.
Is Restylane Right For Me?
Restylane is an excellent dermal filler for adult patients who are in good health and have realistic outcomes for their procedure. Restylane provides an excellent structure for stubborn to treat areas and wrinkles in areas of greater movement. Patients with moderate to severe lines around the mouth tend to see the best superior results with Restylane injections.
What Should I Expect From My Treatment?
Your Restylane treatment should take less than an hour to perform. Patients will be requested to arrive early for photographs and application of a topical numbing agent. As with any injection, there is a risk of bruising, temporary discomfort, or swelling after the injection. The medication can attract water, so the swelling may take a few weeks to resolve fully.
Treatment around the lips can be particularly prone to bruising, and a nerve block can be offered to improve comfort. These effects can often be minimized with ice and concealer can be applied following treatment.
Otherwise, there is no downtime or recovery associated with the injections, and patients can exercise or return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
Bruising can be prevented by avoiding blood-thinning medications (aspirin, Vitamin E, fish oil, ibuprofen) starting 2 weeks prior to the procedure. Heavy alcohol should be avoided in the days prior to treatment. Arnica pellets taken 1 week prior can also minimize bruising and swelling. These can be purchased in our dermatology office, or at a local store,
How Soon Will I See Results?*
The results are also immediately seen, though the final results can take a few weeks to appreciate if any swelling occurs. With full corrections, results can last 6-12 months. The act of injection can also stimulate collagen to grow, which can be even more long-lasting.
